Start with a timed diagnostic, then spend most of your science hours on human anatomy and physiology — because ATI publishes the breakdown, and A&P carries 18 of the 44 scored questions in the Science section, more than biology and chemistry combined. Studying front-to-back through a review book is the most common way to run out of weeks before you reach the part that matters most.
The TEAS Science section rewards a plan built from your own score report, not from a table of contents.
This is a six-week template you can compress or stretch. It assumes nothing about your background except that your time is limited and you are nervous — which, if you are reading this, is probably accurate.
What is actually on the TEAS 7 Science section?
Fifty questions in 60 minutes — roughly 72 seconds each — of which 44 are scored and 6 are unscored pretest items you cannot identify. ATI publishes the scored count for each sub-content area:

Two honest caveats before you build a plan on this table. First, ATI publishes counts at the sub-content level, not below it — there is no official list of which body systems appear most often, so any "most tested systems" ranking you find online, including the ordering we suggest below, is a study heuristic and not published weighting. Second, ATI notes that sub-content area scores are raw percentages and are not equated across exam forms, so use them to find gaps, not to compare attempts.
Why studying in chapter order fails
Because review books are organized by subject, not by scoring weight or by your personal gaps — so you spend your freshest hours on whatever the author put first and arrive at anatomy and physiology tired, rushed, and out of weeks.
Three specific failure modes we see constantly:
- Front-loading chemistry. It is eight scored questions. It feels productive because it is concrete and problem-based, and it is the smallest slice of the section.
- Treating scientific reasoning as unstudiable. It is nine scored questions of pattern recognition — independent versus dependent variables, controls, reading a data table, spotting a claim that outruns its evidence. It is arguably the fastest sub-area to improve.
- Studying A&P as vocabulary. Memorizing organ names without function and interaction fails on TEAS-style questions, which tend to ask what a structure does or what happens downstream when it stops doing it.
Step 1: Take a timed diagnostic before you study anything
Before you open a book, sit a timed science set and score it by sub-content area. You are collecting three pieces of information, and all three change your plan:
- Your weakest sub-content area. This decides where week one goes.
- Your accuracy inside A&P by body system. "Science 61%" is not a plan. "Endocrine and renal near guessing, cardiovascular solid" is a plan.
- Whether you ran out of time. Count what you left blank or rushed in the final five minutes. If that number is meaningful, part of your problem is pacing, and no amount of extra content review will fix it.
Take it under real conditions: 60 minutes, one blank sheet of scratch paper, no phone, no pausing. A diagnostic taken on the couch with interruptions tells you what you know. A diagnostic taken under the clock tells you what you can produce, which is the only thing the exam measures.
A six-week TEAS Science plan you can adapt
ATI itself recommends allowing at least six weeks of preparation before sitting the TEAS. Here is a six-week science template that assumes roughly four to six hours per week on science specifically — adjust the hours, keep the order.

Two rules make this template work. Weakest first, always — if your diagnostic says chemistry is your disaster and A&P is fine, swap weeks 1 and 5 without guilt. And never let a week be pure new content; every week after the first carries a short review block, which is what stops week-one material from evaporating by week six.
How to keep A&P from leaking out of your head
Use short, spaced, active recall instead of long re-reading sessions. Anatomy and physiology is the single largest slice of the section and also the fastest to fade, because it is mostly relational knowledge with few obvious hooks.
A schedule that works without a spreadsheet:
- Same day: close the book and write the system's function, main structures, and one clinical consequence of failure from memory. Then check.
- Day 2: five minutes, blank-paper recall only.
- Day 7: ten mixed questions from that system.
- Day 21: ten more questions, mixed with a system you learned later.
Three techniques that carry most of the value:
- Function before name. Ask "what does this do, and what breaks if it stops" before memorizing terminology. TEAS-style questions are usually built on function.
- Interleave systems. Studying renal for two hours feels efficient; mixing renal, cardiovascular, and endocrine questions in one set feels harder and holds better, because the real exam never tells you which system a question is from.
- Re-ask your wrong answers, changed. A missed question you see again in the same wording tests memory of the answer. How long should I study for TEAS Science?
Plan on a range, not a number, and let your diagnostic set it. ATI recommends at least six weeks of preparation for the exam overall. Within that, honest rough guidance for the science section specifically:
- Recent A&P coursework, strong diagnostic: two to three weeks of maintenance and timed practice is often enough.
- Some science background, gaps in two or three sub-areas: the six-week template above.
- No recent science, or a diagnostic well below your target: eight to twelve weeks, with the extra time going almost entirely to A&P and to timed practice.
These are planning ranges from working with pre-nursing students, not measured outcomes — nobody can promise you a score or a timeline, and you should be skeptical of anyone who does. What you can control is whether your hours land on your actual weaknesses. Pacing: the part most study plans skip
Sixty minutes for 50 questions is about 72 seconds each, and the Science section sits third — after Reading and Math, on the other side of the one 10-minute break, which ATI allows following the math section. You will be roughly two hours into the exam when Science starts. Practicing science untimed, fresh, in the morning, does not prepare you for that.
Practical pacing rules:
- Set two internal checkpoints: about 17 questions at the 20-minute mark, about 34 at 40 minutes. If you are behind, you know early enough to fix it.
- Cap any single question at about 90 seconds. Choose your best option, move on, and return if the clock allows — you can navigate freely within a section until you close it.
- Never leave a blank. Unanswered questions count as incorrect and there is no guessing penalty.
- Simulate the fatigue. At least once, do Reading and Math before your science practice so you meet question 40 in the state you will actually be in.
Final week and day-before checklist
The last week is for consolidation and logistics, not new content. Cramming a brand-new body system 48 hours out mostly displaces things you already knew.
- Seven days out: full-length timed simulation. Score it by sub-area.
- Five days out: repair only what the simulation exposed. Nothing new.
- Three days out: one timed 50-question science set; rotating 15-minute recall on A&P.
- Two days out: confirm logistics — ID, test location or remote room setup, login details, start time. Confirm accommodations well in advance if you need them; ATI notes these usually require advance notice.
- Day before: light recall only, 30 minutes maximum. Then stop. Sleep is a study technique.
- Test day: a calculator is built into the exam — you cannot bring your own. You may have one blank sheet of 8.5 x 11 scratch paper and two number 2 pencils, and nothing else on your desk. Take the 10-minute break after Math even if you feel fine; you have another two sections to go.
Rules and policies do change, so confirm the current test-day requirements on ATI's help center for your testing method before you go. Then trust the plan: you diagnosed honestly, you spent your hours where the questions actually are, and you practiced under the clock. That is what walking in prepared looks like.
